In the past, a badly infected, painful tooth was doomed to be extracted. today majority of these teeth can be salvaged by a special dental procedure called Root Canal Therapy.
When is a Root Canal Needed ?
1. Throbbing pain in the tooth.
2. Swelling in the Jaw.
3. The tooth may be painful to chew on.
4. Teeth that are severely worm out.
5. Pain on consuming hot and/or cold foods.
THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE :
+ YOUR TREATMENT MAY TAKE ONE OR MORE VISITS, WHERE THE NERVE OF THE OFFENDING TOOTH IS REMOVED AND THE ROOT CANAL IS SUBSEQUENTLY FILLED.
+ THE PROCEDURES MAY BE DONE UNDER LOCAL ANESTHESIA.
+ YOUR DENTIST/MAY TAKE X-RAYS TO ENSURE THAT THE FULL LENGTH OF YOUR ROOT CANAL IS TREATED.
+ IF YOUR ROOTS ARE UNUSUALLY SHAPED OR THERE ARE OTHER COMPLICATIONS, YOU MAY NEED TO HAVE APICAL SURGERY (APICOECTOMY) AS ADVISED BY YOUR DENTIST.
+ AFTER THE ROOT CANAL, A CORE FILLING IS DONE AND THE TOOTH MAY SUBSEQUENTLY BE PROTECTED WITH A CAP.
WHILE YOUR ROOT CANAL TREATMENT IS GOING ON :
1. TAKE MEDICATION AS PRESCRIBED.
2. DO NOT EAT ANYTHING HARD ON THE OFFENDING TOOTH.
3. AVOID ANY HEAT FERMENTATION ON THE OUTSIDE.
4. ONCE THE INSIDE OF YOUR TOOTH IS TREATED THE OUTSIDE IS USUALLY PROTECTED BY A CROWN.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR WISDON TEETH
Wisdom teeth erupt between the ages of 17 to 25. When a wisdom teeth does not have enough space to erupt, it gets trapped in the bone. Most people have four wisdom teeth, one in each corner of the mouth, but each tooth can be at a different stage of eruption and position of impaction.
Being at the back of the mouth, goods oral hygiene remains a challenge. Thus tese teeth are prone to infection. Also because of their position and angulation, wisdom teeth can cause pressure on adjacent teeth and nerves. A flare up can cause a sudden onset of symptoms.

Surgery : A) Operculectomy : If the tooth is in the right position and is in the process of erupting, the flap of gum directly overlying the tooth can be trimmed to facilitate eruption.
B) Disimpaction : If the tooth is infected or if there is insufficient space for eruption, then the tooth is surgically removed.
IN CASE OF A WISDOM TOOTH FLARE UP
1. AVOID CHEWING OR SLEEPING ON THE AFFECTED SIDE.
2. IN CASE OF SWELLING, DO NOT DO ANY HEAT FERMENTATION ON THE OUTSIDE.
3. TAKE A MILD PAINKILLER.
4. CONSULT YOUR DENTIST AT THE EARLIEST.
